Oscar Isaac recently received critical acclaim for his lead role in the Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. We caught up with Oscar on the set of the new Live With Chivalry campaign to talk about why he thinks a more socially responsible approach to business is important.
Does business have an obligation to make a difference in wider society?
I think that businesses have an obligation to support wider society because nothing happens in a vacuum, so the opportunities that people get, that entrepreneurs get, happen because they’re part of a forest of individuals. The forest is made up of individual trees but it creates a collective. So anything that gives back to that collective I think is great.
How would you define ethical behavior in business?
To not make everything about the bottom-line and profit. It’s realising that actually there are things businesses can do, particularly when it comes to the community and the rest of the world, that are more important than just the bottom line.
You’ve achieved a lot already in your acting career but how do you measure your own success?
Well for me, I try not to be so fixated on achieving success. I think for me the people that I have always admired the most were the people that do what’s before them with integrity and who don’t compromise themselves and other people to achieve their goals.
